 In 1996 the City of Stockholm, the Stockholm County Council and the Association of Local Authorities in Stockholm County signed an agreement on EU cooperation and part of the agreement prescribed the establishment of the Stockholm Region. Since then, the Stockholm Region has been a platform through which the EU related work of the City of Stockholm, the Stockholm County Council and the Association of Local Authorities in Stockholm County has been carried out.
Later the County Council of Mälardalen joined as a associated member and the Counties of Sörmland, Västmanland, Uppsala and Gotland have signed service agreement with the Stockholm Region. Negotiations with further partners in the Stockholm-Mälar region are proceeding.
