The role of the Stockholm County Council is to ensure that the residents of the Stockholm County have access to healthcare and public transport. It has also a mandate to prevent health problems. Moreover, the County Council deals with long-term traffic planning, regional growth and development, environmental issues and works to make culture accessible to all of its residents.
The International Office of the County Council offers services on international affairs to the politicians and civil servants of the County Council. This involves, among other things, the bilateral cooperation agreements with the Mazovie Region in Poland, the Moscow Regional Duma and the Saint Petersburg Region. The County Council is also a member of networks such as BSSSC, CPMR, Eurohealthnet and EHMA.
The regional planning and regional development issues are carried out by the Office of Regional Planning, an integrated part of the County Council. The Office of Regional Planning seeks to achieve a shared vision for how the unique assets and strengths of the Stockholm region can best be managed and developed, dealing with issues such as land use, housing, environment issues, nature conservation, energy, sparsely populated areas, the archipelago, integration, social perspectives and international cooperation.
The Stockholm County Council is a democratic organisation with elections every four years. The current political majority for the 2006 - 2010 term consists of the Moderate Party, the Liberal People's Party Liberals, the Christian Democrats and the Centre Party.
Current projects run by the County Council are, among others, the New Karolinska Solna University Hospital. This new hospital is being constructed in order to meet new demands of modern healthcare, in close collaboration with research and education.
