Stockholm County

The County of Stockholm, home to one fifth of the population of Sweden, is a political and financial centre. Here is the capital with the royal family, parliament and government.

The county generates one third of the economic growth of Sweden. It is ranked as one of the world's foremost knowledge-based economies with out-standing institutions for research and development, a good innovation climate, and important clusters in the fields of information and communication technologies as well as biotechnology. With its seaports and large international airport the Stockholm region is an important commercial centre in Northern Europe and the Baltic Sea region. The region is also a centre for culture, art, design, and media.

It offers everything from a bustling big city to large sparsely populated areas. Unspoiled nature is never far away. There are about 1,800 farms. Nearly half of the county area is forest. The archipelago of Stockholm with its 30,000 islands offers unique nature experiences near the pulsating life of the city. History is present everywhere in the countryside and the city. One fifth of all ancient monuments in Sweden and 30,000 buildings of culture-historical interest are to be found in the County of Stockholm. Drottningholm Palace, the Viking settlement of Birka and the Woodland Cemetery are on UNESCO´s World Heritage list.
