Sörmland is situated on the Baltic coast, less than one hour away from Stockholm and other large towns in the Mälardal region. The county, often depicted in Swedish literature, stretches into the municipalities surrounding southern Stockholm. The proximity to the metropolitan area is a strong driving force for the county's development and contributes to the mobility of the population. The wide choice of activities in the city is within easy reach. New and fast communications take Sörmland even "closer" to Stockholm, and the labor and housing markets of the two counties are gradually merging.
Sörmland has nine municipalities, 256 000 inhabitants, a 500 km coastline along the Baltic Sea with a large archipelago consisting of around 3000 islands. For around a quarter of a million inhabitants in Sörmland the proximity to nature as well as to the city means quality of life, good housing and good working and commuting opportunities.
In an international perspective the county is centrally located in the expanding Baltic region. Geographically is it situated within the Nordic Triangle, which links the capitals Helsinki-Stockholm-Copenhagen. Major Swedish transport links traverse the county, i.e. the southern and western railway to and from Stockholm and the European Corridor (Stockholm-Copenhagen-Hamburg), and the European motorways E4 and E20. Sörmland also has an international airport, Stockholm Skavsta Airport and a deep-water harbor in Oxelösund. The strategic location offers unique potential for transport and logistics solutions. Great efforts are therefore made within the county to further develop and improve infrastructure.
The international cooperation of Sörmland is coordinated through the Regional Association of Sörmland www.region.sormland.se.
