Representation in St. Petersburg |
The Baltic Sea region is one of the most dynamically developing transnational regions in Europe. In a world subject to economic globalization Europe faces a challenge of maintaining its international competitiveness. This challenge can be efficiently handled by strengthening the interaction with Eastern neighbours. Stockholm region, being the EU’s natural gateway to the Eastern part of the Baltic Sea Region, sees its mission in opening up the opportunities for closer eastward collaboration. In particular, Stockholm region has an important role to play within the context of the EU’s neighbourhood policy towards Russia. Stockholm Representative Office in St. Petersburg was established in February 1997, in accordance with the Co-operation Agreement between the Cities of Stockholm and St. Petersburg. In January 2003 the Office became a part of the Stockholm Region European Committee, and its activities acquired a broader regional dimension.
The main goal of Stockholm Region Office in St. Petersburg is to strengthen international competitiveness of the Stockholm-Mälar region taking advantage of its strategic location within the Baltic Sea area. The Office develops opportunities for cooperation with St. Petersburg – Stockholm’s natural partner in the Eastern part of the Baltic Sea area, and facilitates the development of long-term contacts between various actors in Stockholm-Mälar region and the Northwest Russia. Over the ten years, the Office has built up an extensive contact network encompassing national and regional authorities, cities and municipalities, business communities and academic circles of Northwest Russia.
